Do you engage in negative self-talk? Most of us do! Do you sometimes talk to yourself in negative ways that defeat you before you even get started achieving? We all talk to ourselves constantly. This is inner dialogue that, literally, can make or break you.
If you were told, in childhood, that you were less than perfect (and most of us were) or if your parents warned, "Never brag on yourself," forget their advice if you seek career advancement. You may be harboring negative self-doubts that surface in your everyday conversations with yourself and with others. You can stop this harmful habit and, with practice, start replacing this habit with positive talk instead.
Tell yourself that you can succeed. Tell yourself that you are a good person and a person who has worked hard to accomplish things in life.Tell yourself that you are going to do your very best and then, do it! Listen to your self-talk and censor yourself when old habits start to surface. Stop that negative talk when it happens. Remember: It takes time for new habits to take effect, so be patient with yourself while you're changing old negative self-talk habits.
Don't pre-judge events before they happen. Don't say, "oh, they won't hire me," or, "I don't have what it takes." Instead, tell yourself that you will succeed and that you will win, that you will be hired. Now, if you're saying to yourself, "I can't do this," or "I've tried this before and it never works," that's a perfect example of the negative self-talk you need to eliminate from your life to achieve greater success!

Do you procrastinate? Do you often engage in activities other than those you should be doing? Then, you're probably engaging in self-denial and avoidance. These are negative habits that will keep you from achieving your greatest success!
Keep a day planner with you always and make yourself adhere to its schedule. Plan important tasks first. Save less important tasks or unimportant ones for last. Don't begin each day "on a whim," doing whatever pops into your mind at the time. Do you garden or sweep the walks when it's imperative to mail letters right away at the post office so they get on their way or make vital phone calls early in the morning? Do you sweep the walks because you suffer from "phone avoidance," a behavior that lets you tell yourself you 'don't have time to make those dreaded calls because you had to do housework?"
Return phone calls together, in one period of time. Limit television viewing. Use the things you enjoy doing as a reward after you've accomplished the important tasks of that day. After you've completed your weekly written schedule, examine it to find 'wasted time.' Use those minutes, those little periods of time each day, to accomplish miracles!
And are you constantly interrupted? Put a stop to time-wasters, including people in your life who just don't seem to understand the importance you attach to succeeding. If necessary, you may have to 'weed out' people who don't really want you to succeed.
As Eleanor Roosevelt wisely said, "only we permit people to do things to us." Are you permitting others to harm you? Stay on track! No longer permit people to interfere with your success! It's your life. Do your best! |
